Bobby nearly lost his life 42 years ago while on duty as a US Park Police officer; the incident left him paralyzed from the neck down, however, his service and commitment to his community was never affected. Bobby became a Member in 1989 and served as the Chairman of our ByLaws Committee, was a Delegate to the EMS Association and the Region V EMS Advisory Council. Bobby also served as President of the Charles County EMS Association. Throughout his involvement with Emergency Services, Bobby attended many conferences and meetings on behalf of the Squad and the County. His dedication and commitment will be missed by all. Joshua, 19 of Hughesville, MD, died on September 30, 2011 at John Hopkins Hospital, surrounded by family. Joshua was diagnosed at the age of 13 with a very rare form of cancer known as Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. Survived by his Dad - James Frederick Medlin of Hughesville, MD, Mom - Gail Ann Buck Medlin of Hughesville, MD, Sister - Alexis Marie Medlin, Grandparents - George Richard Buck, Diana Louise Buck, Aunts & Uncles - Joseph Dee Medlin, Kenneth David Medlin, Natasha Lynn Medlin, Shavannah W. Ambulance 519 Responded with Sergeant Scot Lucas (Driver), EMT-B Patrick Dennison (OIC), and EMT-B Robert Ansell (Aide). Paramedic Ambulance 517 also responded with EMT-B Lou Ramer (Driver) and Paramedic Charley Ramsey (OIC). Units arrived on the scene and confirmed that the single occupant was trapped. Rescue Engine 13, Engine 11 and Squad 3 extricated the patient, and the patient was turned over to Ambulance 399. The Patient was transported to CMC with minor injuries. Units returned to service. This is the second consecutive year a Member of CCVRS has received the Hutchinson Award which is presented in honor and remembrance of Justin Hutchinson, a former Cadet and Member of Benedict Volunteer Fire Department, who's life was tragically taken in a motor vehicle collision. The Hutchinson family, along with Charles County Volunteer Fireman Association President, Tom Edwards presented the Award to Ms. Gardner which included a plaque, her named added to the Award Recipient plaque on display at the Southern Maryland Regional Training Center and a $1000.00 dollar scholarship. Cadet and Members Alexis Vincinguerra; Adult Cadets and Members, Joshua Bynum and Andrew Eaton are also to be congratulated for successfully completing the nine month Cadet Program which includes training in Fire, Rescue and EMT. Member Patrick Dennison is also to be congratulated for receiving a Special Award of Recognition for completing the Fire and Rescue segments of the Program. The Charles County Fire/EMS Cadet Program is a collaborative effort between Charles County Public Schools, the Charles County Volunteer Firemen's Association, the Charles County Association of Emergency Medical Services, and the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, to provide hands on training in Emergency Services; including Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical operations. PA518 Responded with EMT-B A. Zambrana (Driver), EMT-P K. Cooper (OIC), EMT-B S. Dofflemyer (Aide), and EMT-B R. Ansell (Aide). Waldorf units arrived on the scene confirming one trapped, and one possible signed release. PA127, Squad 3, and RE123 worked to extricate the patient, while PA518 obtained one signed release. Due to the nature of injuries of the trapped patient, a helicopter was requested. The patient was packaged, and moved to PA127. USPP Eagle 1 flew the patient to PG Hospital. Charles James Coghlan, age 45, tragically passed away on April 2, 2011. "Charlie" as many of us knew him, was a PG county Professional Firefighter, a Charles County Volunteer, and he was a good friend to the Accokeek VFD. He taught many of us EMT and CPR over the years. He will be missed dearly. The members and families of AVFD would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Coghlan Family. May God be with them and comfort them in the days to come and always. Please pass this on to anyone who may have known Charles so they too may say Goodbye to a great guy. Charles James Coghlan, age 45, died tragically on April 2, 2011. Charles was a Charles County Volunteer Firefighter and EMT instructor, a PG County Professional Fire Fighter and a US Coast Guard Veteran of the Persian Gulf War (Memorialized in the 2004 edition of the foundation for Coast Guard History as pictured with his Gun Boat Crew in the Persian Gulf War). Charles was a McDonough High school graduate with an Associates degree from CSM. He recently served as a Civilian Head of the USCG Nationwide Watch Qualifications Training Program and was a Haztrain, INC. OSHA Certified instructor on assignments throughout the world including Russia and Ghana. He is survived by his most treasured his son Tyler, age 21 and his daughter Carleigh age 5. The first one occurred at 0239 IAO Hawthorne Rd/ Quail wood Pkwy. PA518, A519 & Utility 51 responded to the call. We arrived on scene to find a single vehicle that had rolled several times in a field. The single occupant driver of the vehicle was still in the car. RE13 extricated the PT from the vehicle in less than 10 minutes. The PT was taken to PA518 were EMS worked on the PT until Trooper 2 arrived. RE 123 set up the LZ. PT was flown to PG Trauma PRTY1. Units on Scene- PA518, A519, U51, D16A, Chief 1, RE13, Eng 11, RE123, A39, CCSO, LPTP, Trooper 2 The second PI occurred at 1050 IAO Turkey Hill Rd/ Skylark Dr. A519 responded to find a single vehicle flipped upside down off the road way. The single occupant driver was still in the vehicle. RE13 extricated PT and care was handed over to PA127. PA127 transported PT to PG Trauma by ground. National Night Out is a community event that promotes "neighborhood spirit and public safety - community partnerships" with an emphasis on crime and drug prevention. This year the Squad noticed a slight decline in the number of neighborhoods participating, however, the turn out of community members and public safety officials, in the neighborhoods we visited, was much greater than previous years. Excited children, costumed mascots, good food and a mixture of public safety persons, equipment, and displays, all made this years event a success. Rescue Squad participated in the bed races of La Plata Day. We designed our bed to look like Ambulance 517, complete with a bicycle horn as a siren, and lights. Our excellent bed team consisted of Patrick Dennison, Leeann Reece, Josh Bynum, Ben Bates, Rachel Radtke, Kira Kloffer, Natasha Medlin, and Lexi Ledman as our rider. We donned protective, reflective vests, (remember, safety first!!), stretched and prepared to race. We raced in 3 heats, and despite our best efforts, we found ourselves in the running for the Golden Bed Pan Award, the award for the slowest bed, which we ultimately won. We also recieved an award for the Best Looking Bed. A good time was had by all. We want to say thank you for everyone who participated in turning the bed into a reality and for everyone who came out for La Plata Day. Carmel Woods and Mt. Carmel Estates and on Saturday, the neighborhoods of Martin's Crossing, Charleston Terrace, Fredrick Drive, and Linden Lane saw Santa and his sleigh. Many of the children and families pictured knew Santa was close as his arrival was announced by flashing lights and sirens. And while some children eagerly awaited Santa to pass by and handed out candy canes, others were caught a bit off guard and rushed out, still in their pajamas to be greeted with Christmas cheer.
